Envelope Addressing Tips
Preparing your guest list can feel like a surprisingly big task! These tips will help you decide how to list your guests and prepare their names for your invitation or save the date envelopes.
There is no single “right” way to address wedding invitations. Traditional etiquette tends to be more formal, while many couples today choose a more relaxed, modern approach. Choose the style that feels most appropriate for your wedding and your guests, and try to keep that style consistent throughout your guest list.
-
Typically, you’ll send one invitation per household rather than one invitation per individual guest.
Couples and families who live at the same address generally receive one invitation, with the names of everyone invited listed on the envelope.
For example, a family might be addressed as:
Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Familyor, for a more modern approach:
John and Jane Smith and FamilyYou may also list each family member individually by name.
-
Before building your guest list, decide how formal you would like your envelopes to feel.
A traditional addressing style may include titles and full names:
Mr. and Mrs. John Smith
Ms. Jane Smith
Dr. Jane Smith and Mr. John DoeFor a more relaxed approach, you can skip titles and simply use your guests’ names:
John and Jane Smith
Jane Smith and John DavisBoth styles are perfectly acceptable. The choice is yours!
-
Whenever possible, list both guests by name:
Ms. Jane Smith and Mr. John Davis
or:
Jane Smith and John DavisIf you are inviting your guest to bring a date but do not know who they will be bringing, add “and Guest” after their name:
Ms. Jane Smith and Guest
or:
Jane Smith and GuestThis makes it clear that the invitation includes a plus-one.
-
If the entire household is invited, you can keep things simple by addressing the invitation to:
Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Family
or:
John and Jane Smith and FamilyThis indicates that the invitation extends to the family, rather than only the adults named on the envelope.
If you would like each invited family member to be named individually, we recommend placing the parent(s) or adult(s) on the first line and the children on the second line.
For example:
Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith
Emma, Olivia, and HenryIn your addressing spreadsheet, enter:
Guest Name(s) Line 1: Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith
Guest Name(s) Line 2: Emma, Olivia, and HenryThis is especially helpful when you want to make it clear exactly which members of a household are invited.
-
International addresses can vary in format from country to country.
Enter the address as your guest has provided it whenever possible, including the country name. Please ensure you use the correct international postage when you mail out your invitations. You can ask the post office to ensure you apply the corret postage!
-
Give your guest list one final review and make sure:
Each household receiving an invitation has its own row.
Guest names are entered exactly as you would like them printed.
Plus-ones are included where applicable.
Children and family members are included where applicable.
Titles are correct and used consistently, if you have chosen to use them.
Names are spelled correctly.
Mailing addresses are complete and accurate.
Apartment or unit numbers are included.
ZIP codes have been double-checked.
We will use the information in your spreadsheet to create your envelope addressing exactly as submitted, so please review all names and addresses carefully before sending your list to us.
